Stowing Your Gear at Rocky Ridge Ranch

Sunday's a slow-down-and-smell-the-roses kind of day up here.

There's climbers my grandma planted when she and Gramps first dug a well on this ground. She was so sure they'd find water, and he doubted. When they hooked into an underground spring she turned to him and did not say "Well, then. I told you so."

She might have thought it.

She did not say it.

And that taught me a lot, that story there. It taught me to expect good things and to not gloat when they happened. Because what if they'd stopped two shovelfuls before the water sprang forth?

What  if they'd packed up their gear and moved on, her great with child and him tired of traveling, searching, testing.

But they kept digging and here we are, four generations later.

My name's Shane. Shane Ridge, and Rocky Ridge is our place. It's been our place for nearly one hundred and ten years and I'm hoping that my daughter and her family will keep on keepin' on...

And that one of the grandkids will do the same.

Time will tell that and many other things, but for right now, I want to say welcome. Welcome to Ghost Falls, to the ranch and to our home. For this week, or as long as you stay, let me say my home is your home.

And when Laraby puts on the afternoon snack wagon... and Cookie delights us with his August rendition of Croc-hide Soup and Sandwiches... we'll have a chance to get to know one another.

And that's the best thing I know of.

    1. There's a HUGE line at our airport! Southwest is handling it all with their normal smiles and efficiency... but I might be delayed.

There is, however, GREAT COFFEE! (raising cup in salute!)

  3. I brought Costco size bags of peanut M & M's! :)

    4. Marcia, in virtual life anything can be vegan!!!! I actually stopped at the local vegan-o-rama and got you TWO bags.

      Yeah.
I am that kind of nice! 😇

  4. I'm in the motorhome. We're almost there. We camped out in Utah last night, so its a hop skip and jump to the ranch. Thanks, Shane for clearing out a space by the barn for me to park the rig. I'll be glad to have the electricity. No roughing it for me. However, my great grandmother came out west in a covered wagon. I think she passed on the traveling genes and I inherited them from her. smile But I'm thankful Its an RV I travel in and not a bouncy covered wagon. LOL

Thanks, Shane, for having us all!!!

    1. Marcia, there is a flock of escaped Shee on the second last two-lane. But I hear they've got good looking mechanics up here. I don't know if they can fix cars, but first things first!

  7. I'm here.
You had me with the guy who looks like James Garner. Sigh.
You also had me with the anecdote about finding water. Isn't that true of everything...don't give up, your blessing might be in the next shovelful. Or the next trip to the mailbox. Or the next phone call or e-mail.
    Talk to you later,

  8. Good morning kaybee, Preslaysa, Marcia, Sandra, Jill, Sharee, and--last but not least--Ruth! Who's up for an after lunch horseback ride before the writerly things begin? Invitation is open to anyone else who shows up in the meantime!

    1. I'm game for a horseback ride. Haven't ridden since I was in Spain. I love the countryside around there. Let me hook up my rig when I get there and I'll change into some jeans, find my new cowgirl boots and join you.

Hey, Shane, can you saddle up a gentle mare for me? I's been awhile since I've ridden.

    2. I'm in, Sandra. I hope Shane has an old mare for this old mare, as it's been a while since I've ridden. Heck, I'll probably need the get-up step to mount up!

    3. I'd love to join you guys for a ride too. I remember the story of your ride in Spain, Sandra. Idaho has it's charms too.

    4. The last time I rode a horse was 16 years ago in Yellowstone. I did not have a good time. His name was Tenderfoot but to this day I call him Thunderhoof. I was almost swept down the river. My family would tell you that was not the case, but I disagree with them. But I did live to tell the tale. So I will pass on the horse ride.

    5. Hey I'm going to miss the trail ride, a woman just gave birth on my flight! She must have known I've been watching Call the Midwife! We're hung up at Midway. Named baby after me: George Herman Ruth!!!!

  11. Waving to all the early arrivals! I'm so excited to be spending the week with all of you here at charming Rocky Ridge Farm. I'm all settled in at my cozy cabin.

Anyone up for a hike to see the remaining wildflowers? I've brought jelly beans for energy while hiking....less messy than chocolate M&Ms on the trail. We'll snack on the chocolate goodness when we return...if the bowl still has plenty of treats for Ruthy. I don't want to be in trouble on the first day!

Looking forward to a week of writing...and spending time with friends in beautiful Idaho.

  13. Hello Shane and Ghost Falls! I'm here and ready to settle in for my first ever visit to Idaho. Can't imagine anyplace I'd rather be than here with y'all for a wonderful week of writing together. I'm up for a hike. Maybe by week's end I'll brace a horse ride.

Sweet tea or an ice cold Coke anyone? Stop by the cabin anytime for a glass to wash down those M&M's.

  17. I'm so happy to be here with you all! I'm looking forward to the peace of this beautiful ranch retreat, as well as the opportunity Ruthy's offering to seek inspiration. Shane let me go out in the pasture and catch a sweet paint mare to ride. She reminds me of Gypsy, the horse my cousin had when we were growing up. If y'all wait up at the Big Creek trail crossing, I'll catch you there. I brought Mega Peanut M&Ms to share.
