Sunday's a slow-down-and-smell-the-roses kind of day up here.
There's climbers my grandma planted when she and Gramps first dug a well on this ground. She was so sure they'd find water, and he doubted. When they hooked into an underground spring she turned to him and did not say "Well, then. I told you so."
She might have thought it.
She did not say it.
And that taught me a lot, that story there. It taught me to expect good things and to not gloat when they happened. Because what if they'd stopped two shovelfuls before the water sprang forth?
What if they'd packed up their gear and moved on, her great with child and him tired of traveling, searching, testing.
But they kept digging and here we are, four generations later.
My name's Shane. Shane Ridge, and Rocky Ridge is our place. It's been our place for nearly one hundred and ten years and I'm hoping that my daughter and her family will keep on keepin' on...
And that one of the grandkids will do the same.
Time will tell that and many other things, but for right now, I want to say welcome. Welcome to Ghost Falls, to the ranch and to our home. For this week, or as long as you stay, let me say my home is your home.
And when Laraby puts on the afternoon snack wagon... and Cookie delights us with his August rendition of Croc-hide Soup and Sandwiches... we'll have a chance to get to know one another.
And that's the best thing I know of.
It's retreat time! I'm on my way to the Rochester airport, see you all later!!!! I'm bringing M & M's!!!!!
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to hang with you all. 😊
ReplyDeleteThere's a HUGE line at our airport! Southwest is handling it all with their normal smiles and efficiency... but I might be delayed.
DeleteThere is, however, GREAT COFFEE! (raising cup in salute!)
I brought Costco size bags of peanut M & M's! :)
ReplyDeleteShane will be so happy!!!! If you can keep the rancher happy, all is well!
DeleteJill! You are my New Best Friend!!!
DeleteSitting here trying to figure out how to vegan-ize the milk chocolate in M&M's so I can join in the M&M love-feast. **sigh** Sure do miss them...especially the peanut ones.
DeleteMarcia, in virtual life anything can be vegan!!!! I actually stopped at the local vegan-o-rama and got you TWO bags.
DeleteYeah.
I am that kind of nice! 😇
I'd really be happy with carb free M&Ms!
DeleteGOT 'EM!!!! NO CARBS. NO CALORIES!!!!
DeleteI'm in the motorhome. We're almost there. We camped out in Utah last night, so its a hop skip and jump to the ranch. Thanks, Shane for clearing out a space by the barn for me to park the rig. I'll be glad to have the electricity. No roughing it for me. However, my great grandmother came out west in a covered wagon. I think she passed on the traveling genes and I inherited them from her. smile But I'm thankful Its an RV I travel in and not a bouncy covered wagon. LOL
ReplyDeleteSandra I can't wait to see you!
DeleteI'm driving in...Agatha, my GPS, is on board so there's no way I'll miss the turn-off.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Shane, for having us all!!!
Marcia, there is a flock of escaped Shee on the second last two-lane. But I hear they've got good looking mechanics up here. I don't know if they can fix cars, but first things first!
DeleteLooking forward to this week with you guys!
ReplyDeletePreslaysa, me too!
DeleteI'm here.
ReplyDeleteYou had me with the guy who looks like James Garner. Sigh.
You also had me with the anecdote about finding water. Isn't that true of everything...don't give up, your blessing might be in the next shovelful. Or the next trip to the mailbox. Or the next phone call or e-mail.
Talk to you later,
KB
Kaybee there may or may not have been a mouse in...or near... your room. It might be a rumor.
DeleteGood morning kaybee, Preslaysa, Marcia, Sandra, Jill, Sharee, and--last but not least--Ruth! Who's up for an after lunch horseback ride before the writerly things begin? Invitation is open to anyone else who shows up in the meantime!
ReplyDeleteI'm game for a horseback ride. Haven't ridden since I was in Spain. I love the countryside around there. Let me hook up my rig when I get there and I'll change into some jeans, find my new cowgirl boots and join you.
DeleteHey, Shane, can you saddle up a gentle mare for me? I's been awhile since I've ridden.
I'm in, Sandra. I hope Shane has an old mare for this old mare, as it's been a while since I've ridden. Heck, I'll probably need the get-up step to mount up!
DeleteI'd love to join you guys for a ride too. I remember the story of your ride in Spain, Sandra. Idaho has it's charms too.
DeleteThe last time I rode a horse was 16 years ago in Yellowstone. I did not have a good time. His name was Tenderfoot but to this day I call him Thunderhoof. I was almost swept down the river. My family would tell you that was not the case, but I disagree with them. But I did live to tell the tale. So I will pass on the horse ride.
DeleteHey I'm going to miss the trail ride, a woman just gave birth on my flight! She must have known I've been watching Call the Midwife! We're hung up at Midway. Named baby after me: George Herman Ruth!!!!
DeleteSeriously???!!!???
DeleteSandy Smith, Thunderhoof tried to kill you, darling???? Hey, I'm just getting in, can I meet you guys by the campfire?????
DeleteI'm here! First some of those M&M's and then putting my feet up and enjoying the scenery for a while. I can't wait to talk writing with everyone, but first, a nap.
ReplyDeleteHave a good nap to refresh before the work begins.
DeleteWorking in spurts or springs is my most effective way to build word count... Perfect!
DeleteI've been driving for a while. Don't like flying so my trusty little Encore is singing along the highways. M and M's are keeping my motor running. Would love to take a horse ride as long as they are walking along slowly.
ReplyDeleteSandra will make sure you get a gentle horse! She's a sweetie!
DeleteWaving to all the early arrivals! I'm so excited to be spending the week with all of you here at charming Rocky Ridge Farm. I'm all settled in at my cozy cabin.
ReplyDeleteAnyone up for a hike to see the remaining wildflowers? I've brought jelly beans for energy while hiking....less messy than chocolate M&Ms on the trail. We'll snack on the chocolate goodness when we return...if the bowl still has plenty of treats for Ruthy. I don't want to be in trouble on the first day!
Looking forward to a week of writing...and spending time with friends in beautiful Idaho.
Jelly beans and a hike sound great!
DeleteHappy to have you join in, Bettie! Hopefully we'll see some wild roses.
DeleteHave fun, ladies. There was a stray cougar spotted on the back trail, according to Shane, but neither she nor the three Cubs appeared hungry... Then. 😎
DeleteWe caught a glimpse of that big kitty but she was chasing a mouse that ran away from one of the cabins.
DeleteShe chose a mouse.... OVER YOU????
DeleteOn my way...should be there soon! :)
ReplyDeleteCarrie, can you get me some Diet Mountain Dew on the way? I'm running out.
DeleteHello Shane and Ghost Falls! I'm here and ready to settle in for my first ever visit to Idaho. Can't imagine anyplace I'd rather be than here with y'all for a wonderful week of writing together. I'm up for a hike. Maybe by week's end I'll brace a horse ride.
ReplyDeleteSweet tea or an ice cold Coke anyone? Stop by the cabin anytime for a glass to wash down those M&M's.
Do you have Dew??? :)
DeleteI didn't forget you, Ruthy! :) I've got Dew just for you.
DeleteHello Shane and Ruthy. It's so great to see so many of my friends here. I've just arrived and going to jump right in. Yipee-i-o! (Is that right?)
ReplyDeleteClose enough! See you soon. I hope. Did you know that LOTS of people go through Midway and O'Hare???
DeleteI've been to O'Hare and know how crazy it is. Haha! Going for a last spring tonight before hanging up my spurs.
DeleteI'm here. I am very much looking forward to the week.
ReplyDeleteSandy don't let anyone take my room!!!
DeleteJust pulling in. The mountains are awe inspiring. I'm headed for a cabin in the shade near a creek.
ReplyDeleteRight behind you, Bettie...**waving** Now, to find my cabin...
DeleteWonderful!
DeleteI'm so happy to be here with you all! I'm looking forward to the peace of this beautiful ranch retreat, as well as the opportunity Ruthy's offering to seek inspiration. Shane let me go out in the pasture and catch a sweet paint mare to ride. She reminds me of Gypsy, the horse my cousin had when we were growing up. If y'all wait up at the Big Creek trail crossing, I'll catch you there. I brought Mega Peanut M&Ms to share.
ReplyDeleteI am in love with peanut M&Ms. We'll have to hide some from Shane!
DeleteLooking forward to the week ahead and getting to know everyone.
ReplyDeleteOn a side note, our dog is having minor surgery Wednesday to get her teeth cleaned. Please say a little prayer for our sweet Kiley (& me!). I'll check in that day when I can.
Thanks for your hospitality and to Ruth's for the inspiration!
We love dogs in WNY and on the ranch. Glad you're here!
DeleteShe would love the ranch! Glad to be here.
DeleteLooking forward to the week ahead. Can't wait to learn as much as I can. Thank you, Ruth for being such a great host!
ReplyDeleteTammy I'm leaving that hospitality to Shane. I'm kind of a snark, darling!!!!
DeleteHey Y'all! I might be born and raised city girl, but I live in the country now, so I came equipped with my cowgirl boots and a saddle! And chocolate. I brought the peanut butter M&Ms and my mama's chocolate buttermilk cake. Yum!
ReplyDeleteI am so ready to laugh, learn and create with you all!
Now I want cake....
DeleteAnd the M&Ms!
:)
Dana, Beth and I loved seeing you at CFRR! Now the work begins!!!
ReplyDeleteFinally made it from the East Coast. Layover in Denver both ways, so will have an airport visit with family on the way home. LOVE the mountain views (and the James Garner-essays cowboys don't hurt.
ReplyDeleteI brought plain dark chocolate m&m's. Come to the Dark Side... (sorry, channeling my 7 yr old's Star Wars greenness). Looking forward to the retreat. I want to finish some flash fiction and think the views shall inspire me.
Hope there's still a cabin available...
The views will inspire you, and hand over some of those dark M&Ms!!!!
DeleteHey Deb! Get the cabin next to mine! We need to visit!!
DeleteThat was supposed to say geek-Ness... *sigh*
ReplyDeleteHahahahahaha!
DeleteI love GEEKS!!!
In good ol' Brummer fashion it's not a road trip until there's car trouble. But I'm finally pulling into the ranch and heading over to the chuck wagon. I love breathing in that fresh western air!
ReplyDeleteDid you see that wildflower grove just below the lowest pond??? GORGEOUS!
DeleteI know where I'm going to hang out. I LOVE wildflowers! And I think I spotted a few geese on the pond too!
DeleteJust helped Cookie peel a bushel of apples. We'll have some sweet apple treats this week. Feeding the cores to that sweet little horse that I rode earlier. (Reality...my front yard apple trees are loaded down. Wish I could share a few with some of you!)
ReplyDeleteBettie, I'll take a hand with some apples.... Let's have apple crisp tomorrow!
DeleteBut that apple cookin' won't get you out of writing time, woman!
Taking my pile of apples over to the Chuck wagon blog that just opened up.
ReplyDeletePerfect!!!!!
DeleteLooks like I drove in quite late. I have wanted to try those new caramel M&Ms. This is the perfect place to do so as they are zero calories on this retreat. Looking forward to lots of writing time and finishing my first draft this week. Thank you so much, Ruthy.
ReplyDeleteTanya! Glad the road troubles down below didn't hold you up too long! And that rogue band of sheep... weren't they so cute and getting wooly again!
DeleteI'm all about zero calories!!! And writing time!
Howdy, everyone! Just arriving on the late train to Ghost Falls.
ReplyDeleteLooks like I'll need to unpack and find what's left of my M&Ms.
I really meant to share. ;)
Kathleen, we've got more, and there's always Shane's stash in the great room and more on the buffet... but he does make a fuss if those bowls go empty! Glad you made it, and don't you love Ghost Falls????
DeleteIt's such a cool little town!
I'm here! I'm here! Now what? Where do I go? Where do I put my stuff? I see cows! I love cows. So great to see so many familiar faces! (names lol)
