Retreat Schedule!

Good morning, writers... Shane here, and while I won't run you all ragged this week, my job as ranch manager is to make sure everyone leaves here enriched...

And possible a pound or two heavier or lighter, depending on the feed bag.

Any good retreat knows when to schedule... and when to allow time to veg, relax, work, play, etc.

We're no different here at the ranch.

Animals like to eat on a regular basis.

So do our guests.

Meals are listed on the program inside your rooms... You can eat in the main dining room, hours are posted, and we don't do any fancy organizing about who eats with whom. That's up to you. You might meet new folks, folks that change how you see or think about things.

Or you can have food in your room, but there's no room service here. We've got trays, and you're welcome to carry a tray up the main staircase and eat alone, but then you might want to think a little about why you're eating alone.

But that's between you and the good Lord above, because I'm no counselor.

I'm a worker. Like my dad and mom before me, and theirs before them. We work the land. We work the day, the night, the week, the season.

And by and by, we get it done.

And by and by we've built a business like few have seen and fewer have had the honor to run.

That day-by-day stuff works.

That's my guide for the day, for Monday.

Some folks can let work pile up, then dive in, and get things done. But most folks see that huge pile of work and shrink back. Then they go another way.

It's like that for lots of us, and that's why I follow that old saying. A day's work now makes tomorrow's work easier.

Wait, that's not really an old saying, I just made it up, but you get it. I know you do.

I've got a schedule, here on the ranch and here it is: I get up... and begin.

Now my wife, she's a night owl and she's up late with all kinds of  things going on. That works for her, and when my alarm goes off in the wee smalls, I know better than to disturb her. She's got her way and I've got mine, and both are good... Night or morning, no one cares.

Long as it gets done.

And that's what regrouping at the Rocky Ridge Ranch is all about... learning to get it done.

And then having the sense enough to set back and relax....

  1. Good morning fellow retreat writers. I'm praying for a productive day, especially for those of us who have to hit the trail between 9 to 5. May we all have the strength and fortitude to push the pencil on a break or when we get off that ride.

    2. Sounds great. Let me know what trail you are taking and how it was. I might be wanting to hike later.

    3. I'm staying off-trail, but there's a really old building in town I want to see... Anyone up for a trip to Ghost Falls later on???

    4. I love seeing falls. The cascading water is relaxing. Sign me up for that hike.

    5. I'm not sure what trail it was, Sandra. I got lost! :(

    2. I noticed they were all walking toward the second sheep corral.... could 5 handsome cowboys have anything to do with it????

  4. Good Morning! After watching the sun creep up over the hills, it's time to put pen to paper. I'm looking forward to a second cup of coffee in an hour or so with some of you folks to keep us going strong!

    2. Coffee sounds good! And we've got a lesson in the front barn this afternoon, a sheep-shearing lesson, so feel free to gather at the main barn around 3:30 to see Hank, Shane and Tyler shear sheep!

  5. Good morning everyone!

Just got back from my sunrise trail ride, coffee's brewing, and I'm ready to get down to work. Let's do this!

    1. Hey Megan, Where did you ride? I didn't see you out there. Let me know if you want to go riding together tomorrow or do you like to be alone to give yourself thinking time? Love that too. This morning I was able to think of another characteristic for my heroine to deepen her character.

    2. Sandra, you know I can help with that... I'll give her the WORST BACKGROUND ever!!!!

  6. I'm going to take a walk. Can't wait, the scenery is gorgeous. Keeping fit helps my overall goal of serving God through writing. If you feel lousy, everything is more of a chore.
I am looking forward to this week.

    2. They say the Spirithead is an old Indian trail off the back side of the far pasture.... and that it leads to the bubbling spring.

But that might be someone's idea of a nice, cold Mountain Dew. Right???

      Bubbling Spring???

  7. Shane, I also love your idea of getting things done and not letting the work pile up. Discipline is important, though it looks different for each of us.

  8. I am looking for inspiration to start a new cozy mystery. Am going to look over some notes and see if I can add to them. First, a heartfelt prayer that the Lord will give me the theme and plot foundations before I begin.

    2. I'm ducking back in, had a crisis call from the laundry service, it seems that Shane's wife asked him to do ONE THING to get ready for us... and that was to order extra sheets with a Western motif....

Are dolphins indigenous to the West???

      I'm asking for a friend. ;)

  9. Woops, hit publish too soon! So that's my day's work. I will give it a start and intersperse with a couple easy walks, made even easier in this beautiful scenery. Walking is also a great way to think and it seems to help the ideas flow.

    1. Dana, I've had so much fun working with Guideposts on the Mysteries of Martha's Vineyard series... I can't even say how much fun it's been, because it sounds phony/baloney!

If you want to brainstorm, we should have a candlelight BRAINSTORMING SESSION TONIGHT!!!!

      How fun would that be???

Let's meet by the campfire... well, then we don't need candles and they say that the brain works best by firelight... Okay, tonight 8:00 EASTERN time, who's in for a brainstorming session???

      Delete
    2. Gee-whillikers, yes that would be fun! 8:00 EASTERN, yes, I'm in! Right here?

  10. Good morning all! I am juggling 3 projects at the moment and I seem to spend more time figuring out the priority than I do on any one project. So...inhale...exhale...I'm diving in!

    3. Kyle... I get torn sometimes, so I work on the LEAST FAVORITE first... and then working on the other is my self-reward system!!! When I was a kid I'd allow myself 3 chapters of reading once my work/homework/studying was done... but I couldn't even peek at the book until I was done!

So I do the same with my writing. It's so easy to do the most loved project (or the easiest) first... but then I'm faced with the drudge of whatever I shrugged off!

      Delete
    4. GREAT IDEA! I actually got a lot done today. I set a goal for each one. Since they are all pretty much on going projects I'm going to prioritize by using, but my goal is to stay ahead so when the dead-ish lines come due Ill be ready! Lets see if I can be consistent !!!

  11. Wow, just returned from a lovely horseback ride. Thanks Shane for giving me a gentle mare to ride. I get nervous on a horse that is jumpy and you never know what you're going to run into on the trail. We came across several deer. They must be used to the horses because they just stopped nibbling on the grass and watched with big brown eyes as I passed by. I saw a coyote in the distance so thankfully he didn't make the mare nervous.

I'm heading for some yummy breakfast and a hot cup of coffee. Its warming up, but it was a bit nippy out this morning.

    1. It's getting really hot here, and there is a pool around back. Great deck, too... 90 degrees is hot in Florida... but also in Idaho. But once the sun starts tipping, things cool down quickly.

  12. Just got here with my bags..one of the carryons is full of M and M's. Believe it or not, took the train..the California Zephyr part of the way...scenery too beautiful to describe. My prayers for all of you to settle in and hear the whisper of the Almighty as He directs our days. Going to walk and then back to my 500 word goal and the course videos I have committed to do this week. Oh, and the muffins: they are a little travel weary but still delicious. Looking forward to seeing you all at supper.

  13. The walk was wonderful! I met some of you on the way back to the chuck wagon to get some of that wonderful coffee. So many eager faces and oh, the conversations! Writers have words! On my personal journey to come up with the "why" of "why write" as the catalyst for this week.

  14. going to check out the sheep-shearing later. according to my brother (who had to work with sheep on my Uncle's farm), sheep are incredibly um, shall we say... brain challenged? he never did like caring for the creatures because they were always getting into dire circumstances that created more work for him.
I do want to check out Ghost Falls. This morning started with a nice cuppa Joe on cabin porch, listening to the water flow and enjoying the mountain view.

  19. Wow, just love hanging out with everyone. I do feel a bit out of place as I only manage to get a monthly blog post done. I really need to settle on a project and see it through to the finish! I need an intervention for procrastinators' anonymous!! LOL

  21. Good afternoon, all!

    I'm a little late to this round-up, but I'm here now! Woo-hoo!!

Loving the vittles served here at the Rocky Ridge Ranch. (And the best part? I left my Spanx at home! TMI?)

Next best part, of course, is the fun, fellowship, and writing. Looking forward to a great week!

    1. The other good thing about the virtual vittles is - they are 100% calorie free! Of course, the bad thing about virtual exercise is - well, it doesn't burn up non-virtual calories. :(

    2. Cynthia, you were wise to do so! Who needs Spanx here??? :)

      And you made me laugh!!!!!

I have just come in from a day on the farm, I am dirty, gritty, buggy... and itchy.... but I am so blessed, so very blessed to have the opportunities God's put before me...

Two days ago I was autographing books and hobnobbing with delightful readers in Cincinnati.... and now I'm back to my knees in weeds, plants, mums, pumpkins, squash and chickens that won't lay eggs because they're mad at me for putting them in a new shed. A BEAUTIFUL NEW CHICKEN COOP, HAND BUILT BY ME!!!!

There just ain't no pleasin' some birds... and most people. :)

  22. I'm so curious to know how the around-the-campfire brainstorming will go. Ruthy, do you have certain brainstorming techniques?

For my cozy mystery in process, my protagonist is Marcy Saturn, an adult who aged out of the foster care system and prefers not to share that with others. She lives in a guest house on the property of a childless 60-ish couple. Her rent includes "helping out" around their 1-acre property. Other characters - a half-grown border collie, various dog agility people, co-workers. A mean neighbor, also a dog agility person, is the likely murder victim.

    1. Dana, scroll up, I just posted a separate topic for that so we don't confuse the issues.... I want to tell you, doing this on a blog, instead of the old way with a Yahoo group e-mail system, is SO MUCH BETTER!!!!

No e-mail clogs, and it all stays neat and clean!!!!

  23. Ruthy and Shane, I love being able to share meals with everyone but having enough time to write on my own while taking in the lovely scenery. Dinner was downright delicious and friendly :)

    Thank you, Ruthy, for this!

  24. Right now, I'm taking in the scenery. Letting my story percolate. Over my cuppa Joe this morning, God gave me a good start for my next scene. So thankful for time here in a peaceful place. The real life demands are still trying to usurp. So . . . I'm looking to do some serious work after today. :) SO thankful for this place, Ruthy!
